Funds for Student Programs
Overview
The Office of the Vice President and Chief Student Affairs Officer and the Office of the Dean of Students seeks to promote positive, healthy avenues of engagement in University life and, specifically, on-Grounds activities aimed at developing citizen leadership through community, inclusion, and wellness.
We fund a wide variety of programs that loosely fall into five categories:
- Social
- Educational/Academic
- Cultural
- Service
- Other
The original intent of our funding was to encourage on-Grounds social events as alternatives to off-Grounds events at which alcohol was served. While over the years we have expanded that mission to include a wide array of academic and cultural programs, we stay close to the on-Grounds requirement. Student are encouraged to apply to the Student Council Student Activities Fee (SAF) Fund before submitting a VPSAO Student Programming Fund form.
Program funding is event-specific, and may only be used to pay pre-approved expenses for that event. Funds may not be used for ongoing operating expenses. Each funding award closes 60 days after the conclusion of the event or the last day of that term's exams, whichever comes first, at which time any unused balance is released back to the programming fund to support other awards. You must submit the request form 30 days before your event or program. Failure to do so will result in non-approval. A report on the event/program must be submitted to VPSA within 30 days after the event.
Please note that there should be no expectation of continued or recurring funding for any specific event or type of event, regardless of its relative merit or success. A new application must be made for each event, and there may be different outcomes for similar proposals semester to semester or year to year, depending on the availability of funds, equity across the University community, etc. We do not fund event series as a single entity; if a group is seeking funding for events in a series, they will need to submit a discrete application for each event in the series.
Please review the special considerations and restrictions tab before you submit your request. If your request has been approved, please review the "how to use funding" section. We encourage students to use payment works and not seek reimbursement. This will prevent students from using their funds to fund their organization's programs or events.
We do not fund:
- Events at which alcohol is served
- Ongoing operating funds for student organizations
- See Special Considerations and Restrictions for other limitations
See Additional Resources for Student Funding for other University offices and organizations that provide financial support for student programs.
