Lighting of the Lawn

Student organizers settled on the theme “Full Power” for this year’s Lighting of the Lawn in August to recognize that the past few years at UVA have been challenging, in part, because of COVID-19.

“This theme was really originally intended to acknowledge that this would be our first year back to that new normal, back to the UVA that a lot of us had known in the pre-COVID years, and sort of a celebration of that,” Arif said. “So now we’re reorienting ‘Full Power’ to mean that it is only together and only as a community that we are able to have this full power, this full power to love, this full power to remember, the full power to offer the light.”

#BlackUVA presents: Leaning into #BlackJoy during Final Exams

Time: 8 pm Eastern (requested to accommodate Alum on the West Coast)

Location: Zoom

Donna L. Hamilton, MD, Class of ’86, will lead a virtual convening of #BlackUVA and current students to provide support and share tips on how to make the best of this Final Exam period. Dr. Hamilton brings years of experience helping people achieve optimal health across their lives and in all their pursuits. All alumni are invited to share tips (2 minutes) with students. These tips will be archived, and a document will be created based on them. Time for question and answer will be reserved.

#BlackUVAStrong

#BlackUVA Strong: Current students and Alumni have been hoping to have an opportunity for Alumni to return to UVA to be in support of one another. #BlackUVA suggested we leverage a familiar platform that might create a cause for Black Joy to be introduced into this season of difficulty. We will have a private space for support, a photo campaign, t-shirt giveaways, a DJ, and food. #BlackUVA requested the event held in Dawson’s Row. However, given the weather, we are considering possible indoor spaces.

UVA Winter Wander Night

Time: 8:00 PM - 10:30 PM

Location: Boar's Head Resort

Visit Virginia's premier light show, Winter Wander at the Boar's Head Resort for FREE! Winter Wander is an annual experience which allows guests to immerse themselves in a palette of light and color on a self-guided stroll around the Boar's Head lake.

UVA night at Winter Wander will include a complimentary hot cocoa and s'mores packet per attendee. Additionally, all of the Winter Wander experiences and shops will be open including photos with Santa, food, and beverages. Winter Wander takes place on a paved outdoor trail and is accessible to most strollers and wheelchairs.

Getting There

Students (and their guests) may drive themselves to the event by navigating to: 200 Ednam Drive, Charlottesville, VA 22903. Follow signs for the Winter Wander main entrance once on-site.

Students (and their guests) needing a ride to the event may use a special shuttle service provided by University Transportation Services. Pick up for the shuttle will be located in front McCormick RD Houses (across from the Chemistry Building) and will depart every 15 minutes starting at 7:45pm. Return shuttles will run from the Boar's Head until 10:45pm sharp.

World Cup Final Viewing Party

Location: Newcomb Hall South Meeting Room

Come watch the World Cup 2022 Final in Newcomb Hall's South Meeting Room! There will be food/refreshments available. This event is supported by the Office of Vice Provost for Global Affairs, the International Studies Office, Student Affairs, and the International Student Citizen Leaders Fellowship. Registrations are not required. Drop in/stay as you please.
