Academic Success
Multicultural Student Services (MSS) is committed to ensuring that students have the support they need and are aware of all academic resources available on Grounds. We achieve this through a range of programs focused on your academic growth and major exploration.
- Academic Advising: Our drop-in academic advising provides you with the tools, information, and support needed to develop your educational plans. These sessions focus on academic and life goals, assist you when struggling academically, offer referrals to other offices, and educate you about academic resources that align with your goals.
- Peer-led Tutoring: We are proud to partner with the Georges Student Center to offer weekly peer-led tutoring for introductory STEM courses each semester. For Spring 2025, tutoring will be available for MATH 1190/1210 on Tuesdays from 4:00–5:30 PM and PHYS 1425 on Wednesdays from 3:30–5:00 PM in the Multicultural Student Center. This is a great opportunity to strengthen your coursework and connect with fellow students.
- Major Exploration: These programs help students explore and decide on a college major. One such program, "Food and Foresight," takes place every Friday and features various campus departments discussing their majors with students.
- Drop-In Writing Center: The MSC is hosting drop-in consultations with the Writing Center throughout the Spring 2024 semester. Whether you are brainstorming, drafting, or editing your writing, feel free to stop by for a free consultation!
Career Development
We offer two signature career development series designed to explore identity in the workplace and empower students to navigate their career paths with confidence.
- In collaboration with the UVA Career Center, the #Unfiltered Series offers a set of career workshops designed to prepare students for the career life cycle, from exploration and skill development to job placement and long-term professional success. These workshops include guidance on crafting compelling resumes and cover letters that effectively highlight your strengths and experiences. Additionally, you will develop essential interview skills to present yourself confidently and professionally. The series also provides valuable insights into navigating the application process, and ensuring you manage and complete job applications successfully. Finally, the workshops focus on enhancing your networking skills and exploring opportunities for professional growth.
- The Pre-Professional Series allows participants to experience life in various professional fields. Students are able to engage in mock classes, insightful Q&A sessions, and campus tours led by students, staff, and admissions teams. This series offers invaluable insights that could shape your academic and career journey. Participants can explore opportunities at the Darden School of Business, UVA Law School, and the UVA School of Medicine.
