Student Self-Governance

Student self-governance is a unique facet at the University of Virginia that empowers students to actively participate in decision-making processes that directly affect our everyday lives. We test our own ideas, speak up for what we believe is best for the student body, and even oversee important processes at an institutional level, like disciplinary proceedings through the Honor Committee or University Judiciary Committee. Trust from faculty and administrators is an important part of this process, and though we know there will be missteps along the way, we also know that ultimately, we are responsible for our own choices, actions, and decisions.

Organization Types & Examples

Agency Organization: Honor Committee

Agency Organizations act on behalf of the University performing duties the University would otherwise be obligated to perform on its own (e.g. student discipline, supervision of residence halls). Examples include University Programs Council, the Honor Committee, the University Judiciary Committee, and Residence Life.

Activities Fair hosted by Student Council

Special Status Organization: Student Council

SSOs act on behalf of the University performing certain delegated duties the University would likely choose to perform on its own (e.g., administering student elections). Examples include Student Council, Class Councils, and the University Board of Elections.

Contracted Independent Organizations: Salsa Club

The majority of student organizations at UVA are CIOs. These organizations act independently of the University and offer educational, hobby, professional, recreational, service, and/or social opportunities to their members and are recognized by the University through an approved annual agreement.

Fraternal Organization Agreement: Greek Life

Fraternities and sororities at UVA exist independent of the University and govern themselves, providing members with opportunities for life-long friendships, contact networks, leadership opportunities, and chances to contribute to the greater Charlottesville community. UVA recognizes fraternities/sororities through FOAs, agreements that allow chapters to work collaboratively with the University to achieve their goals.

Getting Involved with Student Organizations

Do what you love – and develop friendships and leadership skills along the way. Between service projects, student organizations, and cultural groups, chances are that we've got what you're looking for. Your community is waiting for you!

What is Student Self-Governance?

Self-governance at UVA takes many forms and is widespread across Grounds. Hear from current students about their experiences with governance and how they participate, from adjudicating cases of cheating on exams to planning CultureFest.
