John Cheney is a dedicated professional with extensive experience in student affairs and higher education administration. Currently serving as the Chief of Staff to the Vice President of Student Affairs at the University of Virginia (UVA), John has a proven track record of successfully managing a wide range of responsibilities and projects. He provides the Vice President with professional support and thought partnership to advance Student Affairs and University strategic priorities. He assumes a wide variety of administrative duties and works in close collaboration with colleagues on the VP’s leadership team on various special projects and initiatives.
Additionally, John has served in various other roles at UVA, including Assistant Dean and Interim Director of Student Engagement and Assistant Dean in Housing and Residence Life.
John holds a Master of Science in Education in Student Affairs in Higher Education from Miami University, as well as Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Science in Education degrees from Northern Illinois University. John is Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT 500) and holds certificates in Professional Coaching, Foundations in Design Thinking, and is a Gallup® Certified Strengths Coach.
John spends his time with friends in the community, visiting Charlottesville restaurants, enjoying the beautiful mountains, serving as a community yoga teacher, and reading science fiction and fantasy novels.
