Ramadan is the Muslim month of fasting. Practicing Muslim students will be fasting from dawn until dusk (approx 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM).
Fasting means NO FOOD and NO WATER. Ramadan celebrations often involve late night prayers. It is not unusual for students observing Ramadan to be up past midnight for prayers and then get up at around 4 am to eat before dawn & pray.
Ramadan 2024 will last from approximately March 9th to April 9th. Ramadan is scheduled on the lunar calendar the dates change each year.

A Reminder Regarding Academic Accommodations
It is the University's long-standing policy and practice to reasonably accommodate students so that they do not experience an adverse academic consequence when sincerely held religious beliefs or observances conflict with academic requirements. (See PROV-008: Teaching Courses for Academic Credit)
For questions or guidance about what constitutes a reasonable accommodation, please visit the following link: Frequently Asked Questions - Accommodations for Religious Observance, or contact the University’s Office for Equal Opportunity and Civil Rights (EOCR) at [email protected] or (434) 924-3200.
As always, we appreciate the efforts faculty make to help students feel welcome and supported in their academic success.
