What is a Shelter-in-Place Order?

A shelter-in-place order means you must remain indoors, find a secure location, lock the door and block the entry, stay behind solid objects away from doors and windows, and stay there until further notice. Remember to turn off lights and computers and silence cell phones.

A Shelter-in-Place order is used for:
  • Threats on Grounds (single or multiple locations)
  • Threats near Grounds or nearby off-Grounds locations (e.g. The Corner, JPA area, etc.)
What Should You Do?
  • Find a safe space indoors immediately.
  • Lock doors, close windows, and remain quiet.
  • Stay away from windows and doors, and do not leave your shelter area until the all-clear is given by the authorities.
  • Keep your phone on silent but check for updates from UVA Alerts and local authorities.
  • Update your family that you are sheltering but are safe.
