Asian Pacific American Studies

East Asian Languages, Literatures & Cultures
The Department of East Asian Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Virginia is home to an internationally recognized faculty whose research and teaching encompasses all historical periods of the region, as well as rigorous language instruction from elementary to advanced levels in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. In addition to language courses, we offer a wide array of electives in English on East Asian literature and culture teaching such subjects as classical poetry, early myths, detective mysteries, and contemporary cinema, among others.
Middle Eastern & South Asian Languages & Cultures
The Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Languages and Cultures focuses on the deep historical ties between the many and varied cultures, religions, literatures, and languages of the Middle East (Afghanistan, Jordan, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, Yemen, United Arab Emirates), North Africa (Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia), and South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka).
UVA East Asia Center
The East Asia Center was founded in 1975 to provide a forum for faculty and students interested in East and Southeast Asia. It currently sponsors a speaker series, grant programs, and promotes academic activities and cultural events related to East and Southeast Asia. We are an interdisciplinary organization of faculty, each of whom is a full member of an academic department.

Asian American Student Center (AASC)
- The Asian American Student Center is committed to honoring and increasing awareness around the vibrant and complex cultures, histories, experiences, and issues of the Asian diaspora.
Peer Advising Family Network (PAFN)
- The Peer Advising Family Network (PAFN) is a student-run peer advising program that matches upperclass students with new students to assist in their transition to the University.
Asian Pacific American Leadership Training Institute (APALTI)
- The Asian Pacific American Leadership Training Institute (APALTI) is a 10 week, student facilitated, spring semester cohort-based leadership development program for 1st through 3rd-year students interested in exploring leadership through the lens of the APISAA student experience.
Women's Asian American Leadership Training Initiative (WAALI)
The Women's Asian American Leadership Training Initiative (WAALI) is a student-led, MSS-sponsored program designed for 2nd-4th year students interested in exploring leadership development through the lens of the Asian and Asian American women's experience.

- The Asian Student Union coordinates the Pan Asian Council (PAC). The PAC is committed to fostering the growth of the APISAA community through collaboration, coordination, and cooperation. The different CIOs that fall under PAC include:
