Grounds-wide Events
Throughout the academic year, the LGBTQ Center hosts a series of events to gather in community and prompt conversation about LGBTQ+ identity and issues. Past events have included films, nationally-recognized speakers, social events, art exhibits, and discussion groups. Community programs are organized each year by the LGBTQ Center intern staff.
Queer Culture Week
Held in the Spring, this week is a celebration of the UVA LGBTQ+ community. It features speakers, performers, social events, films, discussions, and is started off with the Queer Student Union’s Drag Bingo. Pride Week is sponsored by the LGBTQ Center, Queer Student Union, Sigma Omicron Rho, and many more organizations.
Love is...
T-Shirt Campaign started in 2009 as a celebration of love that is meant to create greater social awareness around LGBTQIAP+ experience at the University of Virginia and beyond. The power of its message is found in its open-endedness: Love is... It is a message that can span all communities and honors the myriad of ways that humans define and experience love. The t-shirts are distributed and worn on Valentine’s Day, a holiday that celebrates love, but often through a heteronormative lens (a perspective that leaves trans/queer folks out of the broader conversation). This is our way of reminding people that love comes in many different forms.
Trans Day of Remembrance
The LGBTQ Center hosts a Trans Day of Remembrance candlelight vigil to honor the trans siblings we have lost over the previous year. Following the vigil, we gather in community and have time for reflection.
Lavender Graduation
The LGBTQ Lavender Graduation Ceremony commemorates graduating LGTBQIA+/ally students. Please contact Carissa Temerson, Program Coordinator - Multicultural Student Services, ([email protected]) if you have any questions.
