Health and Wellness

Flu Shots and COVID Boosters Highly Recommended

If your student has not received a flu shot or COVID booster, it’s not too late! This year’s flu season is already under way with a very high activity level in many states, including Virginia. Flu vaccination can afford protection from a more serious case of the illness and help stem possible transmission to others. Likewise, the COVID bivalent booster is highly recommended for students, given their close living quarters and the need to self-isolate and miss in-person classes if they become ill.

Many pharmacies and health departments offer both flu and COVID bivalent vaccines. Student Health and Wellness offers flu vaccination through Medical Services and the pharmacy. The Student Health and Wellness pharmacy also offers COVID bivalent boosters. Appointments can be scheduled online through the Healthy Hoos patient portal

Safety and Security

Securing of Possessions and Residence
Thefts and break-ins often increase during holiday periods. Some important tips to share with your student:

  • Take valuables with you if you leave.
  • Lock the doors and windows of your residence, and pull the curtains or shades.
  • Lock or otherwise properly secure your scooter and park it in a designated and well-lit area. Do not store gas-powered vehicles inside.
  • If your car will remain in Charlottesville, lock it and do not leave valuables inside.

Theft of Electric Scooters
University Police are reporting the theft of electric scooters across Grounds and around the Charlottesville region. These devices are classified as motor vehicles for reporting purposes but are NOT cars. Students who have electronic scooters, bicycles and mopeds should ensure they write down and keep handy the serial numbers as well as register their devices with the University Police Department. The department is also making locking devices available to students free of charge.

Rave Guardian App: Quick Access to Safety Resources
University Police are urging students and everyone with a UVA ID to download Rave Guardian. This safety app provides safety resources all in one place, along with the capabilities of texting concerns or questions to the UVA Police, requesting a walking escort, using the virtual escort, and receiving targeted alerts based on location. With the recent end of Daylight Saving Time, now is the ideal time for students to download the app.

Adam’s Law and Hazing Prevention Training

On July 1, Virginia's new hazing prevention and reporting law took effect. Adam’s Law, named in memory of VCU student Adam Oakes, requires mandatory, in-person hazing prevention training for current members, new members, potential new members, and advisors of any college student organization with a new member process.

UVA’s Gordie Center created a comprehensive training program that incorporates best practices in hazing prevention and the required components of the law. During the summer and fall, over 8,500 students were trained by UVA staff.

Hazing is a crime in the Commonwealth of Virginia and is prohibited in accordance with University policy and the University’s Standards of Conduct. The University does not condone hazing in any form. As part of Adam's Law, all colleges in Virginia must publicly report findings of hazing violations by the start of the fall and spring semesters.  If you suspect your son or daughter is experiencing hazing, the University encourages you and your student to report it.

The Gordie Center created an informational video about hazing for parents. The Hoos Against Hazing website provides additional resources.
