Dear UVA Families:

Many students will be heading home for the Thanksgiving and winter breaks in a few weeks, while others will be staying in Charlottesville. However your family is planning to celebrate the holidays, I hope you and your student have a chance to connect. When you do, you may want to discuss some of the items covered below. The end of the semester is always a busy time for our students with exams and many activities occurring on Grounds – and it can be easy to feel overwhelmed.

We hope you find the information below regarding important deadlines, Student Health and Wellness, and Housing & Residence Life helpful. Please discuss these with your student – and accept our warmest wishes for a wonderful holiday season with your loved ones.

Thanksgiving Recess Resources and Links
If your student is planning to stay in Charlottesville over the Thanksgiving break, we've prepared a list of local activities they can enjoy as well as links to important information about facilities and services. This includes times when Student Health and Wellness, UVA Recreation, Dining Halls, and other student resources will be open/closed during the holiday break.

Winter Break and J-Term
Families seeking additional information about end of year and January term resources, deadlines, and tips can find more on the Winter Break and J-Term Housing website.

Counseling & Psychological Services
UVA Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) provides 24/7/365 access for students to virtual, wraparound mental health care from anywhere in the United States at no cost through TimelyCare. Students do not need insurance to access TimelyCare services – only their UVA student email address. Each calendar year, students are allotted 12 scheduled telehealth counseling visits, and an unlimited amount of TalkNow visits. TalkNow allows students to connect immediately with a mental health professional any time of day. Students can also request psychiatric care (by referral from a TimelyCare therapist). Additionally, TimelyCare offers Self-Care Journeys that students can navigate on their own from anywhere.

Student Housing Updates and Deadlines

On-Grounds Upperclass Housing Application Now Open
Current on-Grounds residents who would like to apply to live in upperclass housing for the 2025-2026 academic year must complete the housing application by the December 9 deadline. While the application deadline is earlier this year, students can continue making changes to roommate groups after that date, and the cancellation deadline is March 31, 2025. To learn more about what's new with this year's housing process, visit the 2025-2026 upperclass housing page.

Housing & Residence Life is here to help students think through their housing choices. For those who were unable to attend one of the Fall 2024 Virtual Housing Sessions, the 2025-2026 upperclass housing page also includes several helpful videos and other resources. Students can find a link to the standard housing application, a list of dates and deadlines, current housing rates, and a comparison of on- and off-Grounds housing.

Thank you for staying informed about these topics as a means of supporting your student. We are grateful to our UVA families for all they do to enrich, sustain, and help safeguard our wonderful UVA culture and community. If I or any member of my team in Student Affairs can be of assistance to your student or you, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected].

Sincerely,

Kenyon R. Bonner
Vice President and Chief Student Affairs Officer
