Dear Parents and Families:

Greetings as January comes to an end, and our second semester is settling into a routine.

The University maintains a number of safety systems, and one of those is our emergency notification system. As we do each semester, we will be conducting a test of the system on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 10:50 a.m.

Students who are on or near Grounds will hear the siren and public address system as part of the test. We are making a special effort to tell students about the test so they will not think there is a real emergency. After the Nov. 13 shooting, we do not want anyone to be confused or alarmed.

We strongly encourage all students to sign up for UVA Alert text messages. They may do so via the UVA Alerts website where they can access their UVA Alerts account. The public can sign up to receive UVA Alerts via text by texting “UVA” to 226787.

Please remind your student about the upcoming test. For complete details, please see the Emergency Management website.

COVID and Flu Vaccines Recommended

Student Health and Wellness has been monitoring reports that a new COVID variant, XBB.1.5, is on the rise in the United States and may cause a new wave of COVID infections. The best protection is a COVID bivalent booster vaccine. Now is the perfect time for students to get vaccinated to ensure protection for the spring semester.

It's not too late to get the influenza vaccine, either.  Historically, influenza cases increase as students return to Grounds in the spring. Getting  vaccinated now can help keep everyone healthy and in class this semester.
