Updates and Livestream Information

To the University Community,

I am writing with a few updates related to last night’s shooting and the ongoing search for the suspect, Christopher Darnell Jones, Jr.

Law enforcement, including University Police, local law enforcement agencies, and Virginia State Police, continue their search for the suspect and will not stop until he is found. They have, however, lifted the shelter in place order following an exhaustive, building-by-building search of Grounds and are confident that the suspect has left the area.

Now that the shelter in place order has been lifted, we’ve designated several locations around Grounds for students to gather, including the Newcomb Hall Ballroom and Lounge, Gibbons House, and 1515 on the Corner. These spaces will also have CAPS staff on site to offer support as needed. We recognize our faculty and staff will need opportunities to gather as well and will make opportunities available in the coming days.

In the meantime, we will offer a press conference at 11 a.m. to provide updates to our community and answer media questions. The press conference will be live streamed, available for viewing on the UVA live streaming site. We will also be working with student leaders today to plan for a community vigil and will share more information about that as soon as it comes together.

Please continue to look out for one another and reach out for help if you need it. We will continue to keep you updated as more information becomes available. Sincerely, Jim Ryan
