Wahoowa! The end is in sight as we finish up another academic year. Congratulations on successfully navigating another challenging year. From Delta to Omicron and many other things in between, you have been real troopers. Congratulations on a good job.

Maintaining Healthy Habits

With the end of the year come celebrations to attend and deadlines to meet, not to mention final papers and exams. Maintaining healthy habits during this time is more important than ever. Refuel your body with regular meals and snacks. Get your zzz’s, since a good night’s rest results in better outcomes than pulling an all-nighter (don’t forget that it takes about eight hours for caffeine to leave the body, so avoid it in the late afternoon or evening). Take regular study breaks, and move your body to clear your head. And don’t forget to socialize, whether that’s finding a friend to toss around a Frisbee or have a bite to eat. The experts agree that laugher really is the best medicine.

Celebrating Safely and Smartly

We all play a role in creating a community of care where every student feels safe, included, and supported. Ways to do this can include setting intentions that align with our values, respecting others who do the same, and stepping in to help others when we notice something concerning. Remember the 3D’s (Direct, Distract, Delegate) – three different strategies of intervening and preventing a potential moment of harm. If alcohol is involved, remember that almost all UVA students who drink use five or more safer strategies. As always, be on the lookout for signs of an alcohol emergency (PUBS).

Morven Summer Institute: Space Still Available

The tenth in-person Morven Summer Institute at UVA'S Morven runs May 23-June 17. It includes a new course: ARCH 4500/5500/AAS 4559 Morven’s Enslaved and Descendant Communities. Registration is now open by visiting UVA’s Summer Session website, and enrolling on SIS. The course is available for Community Scholars, undergraduate and graduate students. Morven is offering need-based financial aid through the UVA Financial Aid office. Mental Health Support with TimelyCare

Stressful times call for prioritizing your mental health. TimelyCare, virtual mental health care for Hoos, is available 24/7. Connect with a mental health professional by phone or video within minutes using TimelyCare TalkNow, or schedule a counseling session with a TimelyCare provider of your choice. Get started at by registering with your student email address. TimelyCare services are made possible thanks to a partnership with Counseling and Psychological Services.

Student Health and Wellness: Summer Access

Student Health and Wellness (SHW) remains open during the summer for returning students. If you are not enrolled in classes over the summer, starting on May 30 you will pay $10 per visit per clinic for services received over the summer. Otherwise, if you are enrolled in a summer session, you are covered by your payment of tuition and fees for the duration of Summer Session. If you need to make an appointment, you can do so online on HealthyHoos or by calling 434-924-5362.

Hours for Student Health and Wellness

Beginning May 16 and continuing through late August, the hours for SHW and the UVA Health satellite Pharmacy located in the SHW building will vary slightly:

OPEN: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (Pharmacy closed from noon-12:45 p.m. for lunch).

CLOSED: May 30, June 20, July 4 (official University holidays).

Annual Health Insurance Verification Requirement

Please watch your inbox this summer for information about completing the annual health insurance verification requirementVerification must be completed by the end of August (online portal will open in mid-July).

Reminder: Moving Out of Your Residence Hall

If you have not been approved for a late stay, you must move out of your residence hall within 24 hours of your last exam or by noon on Saturday, May 14, whichever comes first.

Finals Weekend: May 20-22

Huge congratulations to all of our graduating students, who have overcome many challenges in the past two years to reach their goals and take their degrees from the University. You can watch livestreams of both Valedictory and Final Exercises from anywhere. More information.

Best wishes as you finish up the year and head into your summer plans. I look forward to welcoming you back in the fall when we will welcome some 4,000 new first-year and transfer students. In the meantime, please stay safe, be well, and enjoy the summer.
